A Bomber's Night, set during World War II, follows two young girls on a 48 hour mystery / adventure which takes them from Cambridge, England, past Bletchley Park where the British were actively decoding Nazi Germany's Enigma machine, to the underground bomb shelters of London, and back again. I worked closely with the author, establishing tone and setting and carefully checking period details. This undertaking probably entailed more research than any other work I've done but I learned a great deal and thoroughly enoyed the process.
I chose pencil for the 20 partial page illustrations and the 20 small spot drawings which set anticipatory clues at the beginning of each chapter of this young adult novel. The cover incorporated watercolor, colored pencil and digital design elements.
